The scientific name is Charadrius leschenaultii and the Greek name is Erimosfiriktis. It is a small to medium sized bird which height reaches up to 23-26cm. The Greater Sand Plover lives mainly on the coast or muddy beaches and estuaries with large swamps. It feeds mainly on beetles, molluscs, worms, shrimps and other insects. Occasionally lizards. His food locates in the mud and sand.
Το Cyprus Discovery σας παρουσιάζει τον Ερημοσφυριχτή, καθώς αποτελεί ένα από τα πουλιά που συναντάμε και στην Κύπρο. Η επιστημονική του ονομασία είναι Charadrius leschenaultii και η αγγλική του greater sand plover. Είναι ένα μικρομεσαίου μεγέθους πουλί με ύψος που φθάνει τα 19-22εκ..Ο Ερημοσφυριχτής ζει κυρίως στις ακτές ή λασπώδεις παραλίες και εκβολές ποταμών, με μεγάλους βάλτους. Τρέφεται κυρίως με σκαθάρια, μαλάκια, σκουλήκια, γαρίδες και άλλα έντομα. Περιστασιακά σαύρες. Την τροφή του την εντοπίζει στην λάσπη και στην άμμο.
